The museum was founded in 1987 as part of the Kunstmuseum Brandts art center. It is the only state art museum in the country dedicated to photographic art. The collection includes about 9,000 works by Danish and foreign photographers, from the Second World War to the present day.
The museum is housed in the former Brandts Klædefabrik textile factory. Permanent exhibitions are located on the first floor, and special and temporary exhibitions are organized on the ground floor. On average, there are five or six such exhibitions a year. The building also houses a cafe and the only art bookstore in Funen.
