Kladno is a city with industrial traditions, a large mining and metallurgical center. Most of its buildings come from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and in the vicinity there is a large Mining Museum in a former mine.
The history of the city dates back to the 15th century. It was a center of crafts and trade, but it did not develop too quickly. The situation changed in the mid-nineteenth century, when hard coal deposits were discovered here. Rapid industrialization and the construction of mines changed the character of Kladno and the entire region. Currently, it is primarily an industrial center.
The main attractions of Kladno are connected with the industrial past. You can visit the mining museum, the Mayrau Mine in Vinarice near Kladno, and also go on a tour of the "Industry Route" in the now closed Vojtesskou steel mill.
Near Kladno, there is also the Romanesque rotunda of St. Peter and Paul on the Budenets hill. It is one of the most important monuments from this period in Central Bohemia.
