Mattsee is a resort town on the lake of the same name. It is surrounded by the picturesque hills of the Salzburg Alps, and there are snow-capped peaks on the horizon. The area is conducive to active recreation, both hiking and water sports.
In the 8th century, in today's Mattsee, the Bavarian prince Tassilo III founded a Benedictine monastery. It was an important center for the development of science and culture. With a short break caused by the dissolution of religious orders by Joseph II, the monastery functions to this day. Its buildings include a gothic monastery church and baroque residential and farm buildings. The interior of the temple was rebuilt in the baroque style in the 17th century. The Mattse Monastery Museum with a rich collection of sacred art, liturgical utensils and vessels as well as items related to the history of the congregation is also open to the public. The oldest surviving document comes from the 10th century.
The town, although small, has a lot of charm. It is situated between two lakes, and its center has nice buildings. There is a promenade by the lake and a marina where boats and sailboats can moor. There is a water equipment rental and areas for walking. A big attraction is the grassy Mattsee Beach with a pavilion, a slide and leisure facilities. In the season, it fills up with sun-hungry tourists.
Visiting Mattsee and the surrounding area offers many surprises. They are above all beautiful places where you can take a break from the hustle and bustle. But there is also an attraction here for lovers of technology. In the village, there is the Fahr (t) raum museum devoted to the history of the automotive industry and the figure of Ferdinand Porsche. It houses antique cars and their equipment.
