Bad Ischl is a health resort that was very famous already at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Surrounded by mountains and situated in a very attractive region, the Salzkammergut was one of the favorite vacation spots of Austrian emperors.
The health resort started to develop at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Members of the imperial family soon found themselves among its regulars. Archduchess Sophia's stays, which ended with recovery from infertility, brought him great fame. Bad Ischl has grown into a fashionable resort where it was necessary to show at least once a season. In 1849, an imperial residence was built in the city, the Imperial Villa, in which Franz Joseph II met and proposed to Empress Elizabeth, known as Sissi, a few years later. Today, the Imperial Villa is one of the main sights of Bad Ischl and is open to the public.
The rushing waters of Bad Ischl are brines with a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius. A big attraction of the village is the Salzkammergut Therme aquapark, where you can use thermal pools, saunas and various entertainment.
In addition to the typical spa attractions, Bad Ischl also attracts with its wonderful mountain surroundings. Mount Katrin rises above the city, which can be reached by cable car or several hiking trails. There is a beautiful view of the surrounding area from here. Another frequent excursion destination is the Rettenbach Gorge and the Siriuskogl Ausflugsgasthaus lookout tower on the Siriuskogl hill.
When visiting Bad Ischl, you cannot miss the spa buildings, the spa park and several interesting museums. They include the City Museum, the Transport Museum and the Photo Museum with a collection of photographs and antique cameras.
