Thun is a lake town of the same name, known primarily for its medieval castle. Another of its attractions is a 38 x 7.5 m panorama painted at the beginning of the 19th century.
The beginnings of the town are related to the construction of a stronghold by the Zahring family in the 12th century, which is the main attraction of Thun to this day. Currently, the medieval Castle of Thun houses a museum that boasts a large collection of weapons and military.
Below the castle is the picturesque Old Town, the main part of which is concentrated on the bank of the Aare River. You can see the fourteenth century town church, the sixteenth century town hall building and many picturesque tenement houses. Various parts of the city are connected by bridges, the largest of which, covered, is at the mouth of the river to Lake Thun.
The city is also known for its panorama, considered to be the oldest painted panorama. The painting painted in the years 1809-1814 by Marquard Wocher shows the appearance of Thun at the beginning of the 19th century and is not only a valuable work of art, but also a source of knowledge about the history of the city.
In addition to Panorama Thun, there are several other museums in the city. They include the Thun Art Museum and the HAM Foundation presenting collections of military relics related to artillery.
Due to its lakeside location, Thun also offers typical holiday entertainment. There is a Thun beach with water equipment rental. You can also take a boat trip on Lake Thun.
