Sion is the capital of the Valais canton and one of Switzerland's most important wine centers. The vineyards around the town are the production of Fendant wine. There are also many valuable monuments, many of which have medieval origins.
The history of Sion dates back to Roman times, and already in the 6th century the bishopric was located here. According to historians, it is one of the oldest cities in Switzerland, its most characteristic building is the Tourbillon Castle standing on a rocky hill. Its walls offer great views of the surrounding area.
Among the greatest attractions of Sion are its medieval monuments, including the Romanesque-Gothic Basilica of Valère, where you can see one of the oldest organs in the world from the 15th century, and the late Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady of Zion. It stands on the site of an 8th-century church and is dominated by a 12th-century Romanesque tower.
The city has a well-preserved historic center with bourgeois houses from the 15th to 17th centuries and numerous museums. Among the most important are the Valais History Museum, the Valais Art Museum, the Nature Museum, and the Penitentiary Museum.
Tourists coming to Sion can also learn about the wine-growing traditions of this region. Many vineyards organize tastings and themed walks. In turn, in the city itself, you can take advantage of the rich offer of wine bars, including the Devil's Wine Cellar.
Sion is situated in the Rhone valley surrounded by mountains. It is a good area for active tourism, hiking and cycling. Some of the peaks can be reached by cable cars such as the Veysonnaz and Piste de l'Ours. A big attraction of Sion is Domena Wysp with its swimming pools and sports grounds.
