Saanen is a holiday village in the Gstaad ski region. It is one of Switzerland's largest winter sports resorts with 200 kilometers of slopes and a high-class après ski offer.
The town is recorded as early as the Middle Ages, when it was mainly a shepherd's settlement and a small craft center. In Saanen, as in Gstaad, 4 km away, a lot of traditional alpine buildings have been preserved, around which in the 20th century guesthouses, hotels and resorts intended primarily for skiers were developed.
Due to its location in the Gstaad ski region, winter tourism is a major development in Saanen. Access to 200 km of ski runs, snow parks, cross-country ski runs, snowboard runs, toboggan runs and facilities providing entertainment and spending time after the madness on the slope make it a good base for skiers.
In summer, the main attractions of Saanen include the possibility of mountain hiking, which is helped by year-round cable cars and lifts, such as the Eggli cable car and the Gstaad Eggli cable car. There are also bicycle routes, spa and wellness centers, tennis courts and recreational areas.
