Meiringen is a small alpine town made famous by Arthur Conan Doyle in his Sherlock Holmes book. The Reichenbach Falls, located here, made the battlefield between Holmes and his fierce enemy, Professor Moriarty, the site of a fight.
The Meiringen area offers many beautiful destinations for excursions. Among them is the Aare Gorge. The attractive scenic route runs along a rushing river, in a gorge with steep rock walls. It leads along the jetties and through the passages carved in the rocks. The Reichenbach waterfall is also a very popular excursion destination, which can be reached via the historic cogwheel railway.
Meiringen's big attraction is the Sherlock Holmes Museum, where you can see the reconstruction of his London home. There is also a detective statue in the city that reminds of a story by Arthur Conan Doyle located in Switzerland.
In Meiringen, a lot of historic buildings have been preserved to this day, including the Resti tower, the church building and numerous houses built in the Alpine style.
