Călărași is a city and port on the Danube near the border with Bulgaria. Currently, it is primarily an industrial center, but its long past is evidenced by the collections of local museums and preserved monuments.
The city was founded as a station on the courier and merchant route from Bucharest to Istanbul. It takes its name from the horse riders "călărași". Until the 19th century, there were several inns and a market hall here. Only after the town was founded, craftsmanship developed and permanent residents appeared.
Călărași's attractions include the 19th-century VolnaChurch and Alexe Church, and the Cathedral of St. Nicholas . You can learn about the history of the city and the region at the Călărași CityMuseum and the Lower Danube Museum . Some historic buildings, mainly from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, have been preserved in the center.
A family attraction is the small Călărași Zoo , where you can see mainly animals characteristic of temperate climatic zones. There are two beaches on the bank of the Danube, Beach Podul 4 and Beach Mare , where you can relax by the water. A bathing area has also been created and there are several eateries in the vicinity.
