Tropaeum Traiani

Local name: Tropaeum Traiani

Tropaeum Traiani is a Roman monument standing in the village of Adamclisi. It was built in AD 109 to commemorate the Roman conquest of Dacia. Its appearance was inspired by the Mausoleum of Augustus located in Rome. The present monument is a reconstruction built in the 1970s.

The monument consists of a massive round base with a diameter of 38 m, in the center of which stands a hexagonal pole topped with a sculpture depicting prisoners and trophies. The monument is decorated with metopes, i.e. bas-reliefs made on the surface of small squares. Of the original 54 metopes, 48 have been preserved. They show figures of Roman legionnaires fighting with the Dacians.

On the hexagonal pole you can see the inscription according to which the monument was dedicated to Mars the Avenger.
