Adamclisi is a small town known primarily for the remains of the Roman city of Civitas Tropaensium and the monumental monument Tropaeum Traiani discovered here.
Civitas Tropaensium was founded by veterans of the Danish wars on the site of an earlier Danish settlement. It quickly grew into the most important center of the province of Scythia Minor and became its capital around 200 AD
The greatest attraction of Adamclisi is the monument Tropaeum Traiani, built here in AD 109. It was erected in memory of the defeat of the united Dak and Sarmatian tribes by Emperor Trajan. It is a building in the shape of a large cylinder topped with a polygonal pedestal and a sculpture depicting Dack armor and prisoners. On the walls of the base of the monument there are over 50 bas-reliefs with war scenes.
The present shape of the monument is due to its restoration in the 1980s. The original plaques and sculptures were then placed in the Archaeological Museum in Adamclisi . In the vicinity of the monument, you can see the archaeological site of Civitas Tropaensium. You can clearly see the outline of the buildings, including the Basilica Forensis , military barracks and the entire layout of the former military camp, which over time turned into a city.
