Ovidiu Square

Local name: Piața Ovidiu

Ovid Square is the most important point of the city. Its name comes from the famous Roman poet Ovid, who reportedly died in this city. The square does not have commercial or public functions, but it is a popular tourist attraction. There are, for example, the Museum of History and Archeology and a building hiding a well-preserved Roman mosaic - one of the largest discovered so far in the world.

Of course, the statue of the poet could not be missing in Ovid's Square. The statue made by the Italian sculptor - Ettore Ferrari in 1887 stands in front of the museum building. According to legend, the tomb of Emperor Augustus is located under the monument, but it is not a fact confirmed historically.

For the convenience of tourists and residents, there are benches in the square, and in side streets, numerous restaurants and cafes. Constana was once the capital of historic Dobrogea. The site is well worth a visit for its strong ties to ancient Rome, as evidenced by the excavations and finds that can be seen in museums and exhibitions around the square.
