Teramo is a city situated between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. Thanks to this, it can be a good base for people who like to combine active leisure with sunbathing. There are also many monuments in the city, the most valuable of which come from the Middle Ages.
The city already existed in pre-Roman times, and the Romans made it an important center of trade. There are remains of an ancient theater and several villas with mosaics. Numerous items found during excavations are on display in the local archaeological museum.
The greatest heyday of Teramo took place in the Middle Ages. At that time, a large part of the center's buildings was built, which has survived to this day, including the Romanesque cathedral of St. Berard, where you can see a silver frontage with 35 carved scenes from the life of Christ. Built at the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries, the Church of Santa Maria de Praediis was built using materials from Roman temples and city buildings.
Teramo's big attraction is its location between the sea and the mountains. Getting to the sandy beaches of the Adriatic takes less than an hour, and the same time should be spent to get to the highest peak of the Corno Grande Apennines. The surrounding Gran Sasso and Laga massifs are cut by a dense network of footpaths and are easily accessible via local roads.
