The Italian national park was established in 1993 and covers an area of 71 437 ha, mainly mountainous areas. The highest mountain in the park is Monte Vettore with a height of 2476 m above sea level. There are also other hills above 2000 m above sea level, rivers and Lake Lago di Pilato.
