Sulmona is a city known primarily as the birthplace of Ovid. There is also a nicely preserved center, and all over Italy is known for the local sweets and confetti.

In ancient times, the city was called Sulmo. One of the most important Roman poets, Ovid, was born here in 43 BC. His statue stands today in one of the city's main squares, Piazza XX Settembre.

A large part of Sulmona's monuments was built in the Middle Ages. One of them is the cathedral that stands on the site of a Roman temple. Its current interior is the result of an 18th-century reconstruction caused by an earthquake. There is a baroque marble Chapel of the Annunciation in the nave, and a Roman crypt in the vaults. An interesting monument is the late Gothic Annunziata Palace. The medieval aqueduct is considered one of the greatest attractions of Sulmona.

All over Italy, Sulmona is known for producing confetti, almond sweets surrounded by colorful sweet toppings. They are used to create decorations in the form of bouquets of flowers, baskets, fruit bowls, which are donated on the occasion of weddings and other celebrations.
