The abbey was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman municipality named Cereatae, dedicated to the goddess Ceres. It is also the birthplace of Caius Marius, from whose name the abbey later took its name. Documents testify to the presence of a Benedictine monastic community in the 11th century under the name of Casamari.
