Sassuolo is a historic city and a thriving industrial center specializing in the production of ceramics. Ceramic tiles known all over Europe are produced here, and there are over 300 factories specializing in their production in the city and its vicinity.
For almost the entire period of its existence, from medieval times, Sassuolo was in the sphere of influence or under the rule of nearby Modena. There is the Ducal Palace, built in the 17th century. Inside, baroque frescoes have been preserved, and in the basement there is a swimming pool called il Fontanezzo.
In addition to the palace, Sassuolo's attractions include the church and convent of San Giuseppe, as well as the Castle of Montegibbio. A lot of Renaissance and Baroque tenement houses and numerous churches have been preserved within the old town.
