Petralia Sottana is a small town in the Madonie Park. The village, surrounded by mountains, can be a good starting point for people who like active tourism, and its buildings delight with a historic atmosphere.
The town has its roots in the early Middle Ages. The local church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary comes from the 9th century and was rebuilt many times in later centuries. In turn, the 17th-century baroque church of St. Francis has wonderful frescoes made by the Sicilian painter Zoppo di Gangi. Petralia Sottana is situated on a hill. Its buildings rise towards the church crowning the gable. The streets are narrow and winding here, and the houses are standing next to each other, looking like they are attached to a rocky slope.
Around the town are the Madonie Mountains, which are protected by the regional nature park. It is one of the greatest attractions of Petralia Sottana. There are numerous hiking trails among the mountains and valleys, allowing you to get to know this picturesque region.
