MUSSOMELI tourist attractions

+1 attraction

Mussomeli is a historic town with a preserved historic center. It is known for the ruins of a Normandy castle standing on a rocky hill.

The city was founded in the 14th century by Manfred III di Chiaromonte on the site of an earlier Arab settlement. He also ordered the construction of Chiaromonte Castle, which was of great strategic importance due to its location. Today its ruins are the most important attraction of Mussomela.

The oldest part of Mussomeli is situated at the top of the hill. The medieval urban layout, narrow, cobbled streets and tightly standing houses have been preserved here. Among them, you can find well-preserved churches from different eras. The most beautiful are the baroque sanctuary of Madonna dei Miracoli, the Church of Our Lady with a richly decorated oratory, built at the beginning of the 17th century, and the Renaissance church of St. Francis. There are also several city palaces and a clock tower in the old town.
