Gangi is a historic town situated on a hill. From a distance, it looks as if the houses are attached to the rock, one above the other. In the oldest part, there are several historic churches and a tangle of narrow streets and squares.
The city was founded in Greek times and was then occupied by the Romans. The remains of Roman buildings were discovered under several churches. Monuments from ancient times can be seen in the local Archaeological Museum.
In its present shape, the Ganga was established at the beginning of the 14th century, its oldest part is located on the top of the hill. The remains of the city walls have been preserved here, as well as the city tower, the castle, which was the seat of the city sovereign, and several historic churches. The most important of them is the 14th-century church of St. Nicholas, the interior of which is decorated with 18th-century frescoes. There are also the Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit and the Gangivecchio Abbey on the site of the Roman temple.
