Uhldingen-Mühlhofen is a tourist destination on Lake Constance, known as the center of summer recreation. There is also the archaeological open-air museum Unteruhldingen, entered on the UNESCO list.
The areas occupied by the town today were already inhabited in prehistoric times. The local population built original houses on piles driven into the bottom of the lake. The discovery of the remains of these buildings was the beginning of the creation of an archaeological open-air museum. Here, visitors can see how a village in the waters of Lake Constance lived in the Neolithic and Bronze Age.
A lot of historic buildings have been preserved in the town itself. The most important monument is the Birnau Basilica, which is part of the Cistercian monastery. The interior of the temple, built in the 18th century, is in the Rococo style and is one of the best examples of this style in southern Germany.
Other interesting monuments of the town are the Church of St. Martin with a tower from the 12th century, the baroque Maurach castle, which served as a port building for the Birnau monastery, and a 16th century chapel with a baroque altar.
Those who come to Uhldingen-Mühlhofen for leisure will find a well-developed beach with boat and pedal boat rentals and dining facilities. You can find entertainment at the Golf Adventure golf course, and the House of Reptiles is an interesting family attraction. The city also houses the Museum of Cars and Tractors.
