Trier is one of the oldest cities in Germany and a place where you can see many monuments from Roman times. Along with the local cathedral, it was entered on the UNESCO list.
The city was founded in 16 BC under the name Augusta Treverorum. It quickly became a thriving center of commerce and was elevated to the rank of one of the capitals of the Roman Empire. Constantius I, and later his son, Emperor Constantine the Great, had their seats here.
Souvenirs from Roman times occupy a prominent place among the monuments of Trier. The most famous are Porta Nigra, i.e. the Black Gate, which is a remnant of Roman fortifications and the Basilica of Constantine, which currently functions as an Evangelical temple. There are also the ruins of the Imperial Baths, the Barbara Baths, the Forum Baths and the Trier Amphitheater. The Roman Bridge, built in the 2nd century AD and the oldest such structure in Germany, still plays its role.
After the fall of the Western Empire, the city came under the rule of the Franks and Germans. Already in the 4th century, the first church was built here, the elements of which are built into the Romanesque cathedral of St. Peter. The entire cathedral complex is considered to be one of the most valuable Romanesque monuments in Germany. It also includes the 13th century church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the cathedral, you can visit the treasury, where priceless collections of relics are kept, including St. Peter or the sandals of St. Andrew. There is also the Museum of the Trier Cathedral, which collects a collection of religious art.
The Old Town of Trier is concentrated around the Main Square. Within it, you can see the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias, the Church of St. Paul, Church of St. Gangolfa and a baroque fountain on the square. There are also museums, such as the State Rhenish Museum, the Trier Toy Museum or the Simeonstift Trier City Museum.
