Schiltach is a historic town in the Black Forest with many half-timbered buildings preserved. Due to its location, it is a good base for excursions in the area, and in the town itself you can also visit several museums.

For centuries, the city was known as a center of wood production and tanning. The Schüttesäge Museum, located in a historic tannery, reminds you of this. Items related to forestry work, wood and leather processing, as well as rafts for floating wood are on display.

The historic Old Town is a major attraction in Schiltach. It has retained its medieval layout, and most of the houses located here come from the period from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. They were erected mainly in the technique of half-timbered walls, and therefore the city is now on the German Half-timbered Buildings Route. In the Old Town, you can also see a historic pharmacy from the first half of the 19th century, which houses the Pharmacy Museum. Another unusual museum is the Museum of Water, Bath and Design. It shows the history of hygiene and water use in households.

The surroundings of Schiltach are made of wooded hills with many hiking trails. You can go for a walk for several hours through the woods and for a long backpacking trip lasting several days.
