Oranienbaum-Wörlitz is a city that is known primarily for its park and palace complex entered on the UNESCO list. Two palaces surrounded by parks and a historic spatial arrangement have been preserved here.
The cities were merged into one organism in 2011, and previously operated as two separate centers. They developed from medieval times and were the seat of the princes of Anhalt-Dessau. Both in Oranienbaum and Wörlitz you can see palaces, and in addition, Oranienbaum has retained the layout of the former village combined with the palace, with regular streets, an entrance gate and an inn run by the owners of the property.
The biggest attraction of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz is the Classicist Wörlitz Castle and the surrounding Worlitzer Park. It is a landscaped English park with a large lake on which the Stein Island is located, the Garden of the Kingdom of Dessau Worlitz and elements of romantic garden architecture. These include the Gothic House, one of the oldest preserved neo-Gothic buildings in Germany, and the Wila Hamilton.
In Oranienbaum there is an older, late baroque palace built in the 17th century by Cornelis Ryckwaert. It belongs to the UNESCO-listed park and palace complex, but it has a style different from that of the Worlitzer Castle.
