Oberammergau is an alpine holiday village and a small ski area. It is known for the Passion shows that have been staged since 1634, attracting tourists from all over the world.
The Passion spectacle was performed for the first time in 1634 after the end of the plague, which decimated the inhabitants. The survivors took an oath to organize ceremonial performances every 10 years. Currently, they are held from May to October in each year ending a given decade. About 100 performances take place then, and a special building, the Passionspielhaus, was built for their staging in the 1930s.
Another attraction of Oberammergau is its buildings. The traditional alpine houses with sloping, tiled roofs are painted in pastel colors. On their walls there are painted scenes referring to the events of the Passion as well as other biblical and fairy-tale scenes.
The town is also known for its handicraft products, mainly wooden, and there are several dozen craft workshops. They sell their products and give you the opportunity to look behind the scenes and see what their work looks like.
The surroundings of Oberammergau are perfect for active tourism. In summer there are many hiking trails, and in winter there is a small ski resort with several slopes. They are served by the Kolbensessel chairlift, which is operated all year round. In summer, it allows you to reach higher-altitude trails and admire beautiful views. Another attraction of the resort is the Alpine Coaster toboggan run.
