Koblenz lies at the mouth of the Moselle to the Rhine. In this place there is the most famous place in the area, Deutsches Eck or the German Horn with the statue of Wilhelm and Hohenzollern. In the city a lot of old buildings have been preserved, with several interesting churches and palaces. There are also many museums related to the history and culture of the region.
The first defensive settlement in the place of today's city was founded by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, the whole area belonged to the archbishops of Trier, and in the 13th century a thriving center of the Rhine wine trade developed here. Due to its location, the city was of strategic importance and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress was erected on the hill above the Moselle estuary to the Rhine, which is one of the most important attractions.
The stronghold is located at an altitude of over 100 m above the Rhine Valley. It can be reached on foot or by the Koblenz cable car. From the walls you can admire the city panorama with the famous Deutsches Eck. Near the fortress there is also the Rhine-Moselle viewing platform.
The Old Town in Koblenz was formed in the tenth century around the Romanesque Basilica of St. Castor. Today, you can find here a cross-section of buildings from different periods, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Among the most important are the Church of Our Lady, the Electoral Palace, baroque buildings from the Prussian wall called the Four Towers and the Renaissance-Baroque town hall. The big attraction is the medieval Stolzenfels Castle rebuilt in a romantic style on a hill above the Rhine.
Koblenz also has many interesting museums to offer. You can find here, among others National Museum, Museum of the Middle Rhine, DB Museum dedicated to the history of German railways, Mosellum with collections related to the Moselle and the Rheinisches Carnival Museum.
