Haigerloch is a small town in the picturesque surroundings of the Swabian Alb. At the end of World War II, there was a laboratory here that worked on the fission of the atom and the creation of a nuclear reactor.
The town dates back to the 11th century. At that time, there was a castle on a hill above the town center, which was the administrative center of the area. During its history, Haigerloch was in the hands of the most important families of Germany and Austria, including the Hohenzollern and the Habsburgs.
The city went down the most in history at the end of World War II. It was then that the Emperor Wilhelm Institute of Physics was moved here, where work on the development of a nuclear reactor was carried out. Today in Haigerloch you can visit the Atomkeller Museum located in the basement under the Castle Hill. Souvenirs and replicas of devices used during the research are gathered here. It is currently Haigerloch's biggest attraction.
Many historic tenement houses have been preserved in the Old Town of Haigerloch. The most important monument is the Haigerloch Castle standing on a hill with a Gothic castle chapel. In its surroundings you can visit the rose garden.
