Freudenstadt is a town at the foot of the Black Forest known as a climatic health resort since the 19th century. In its center there is the largest market square in Germany and a Gothic-Renaissance Evangelical church.
The city developed in the Middle Ages as a commercial center. At the end of the 16th century, it was thoroughly rebuilt at the behest of Prince Frederick of Württemberg. A uniform urban layout has been created here, focused around a large, square market square. It was surrounded by tenement houses with arcades, and a town church was erected in the vicinity.
In 1945, the city center was almost completely destroyed by French troops. The post-war reconstruction was based on the plans from the end of the 16th century and the historic town layout was reconstructed.
Important attractions in Freudenstadt are its museums. The Museum of Local History is at the forefront, while Experimenta Freudenstadt - a science center where you can learn about physics, chemistry and astronomy - is very popular among families.
The city's surroundings are conducive to active recreation. In winter, there is a ski station here, including the Kniebis ski lift. There are also many hiking trails that you can walk, among others, to the Herzog Friedrich Tower. It is an excellent vantage point over the surrounding area.
