Dessau-Roßlau is a city created in 2007 by merging two neighboring centers and being one of the main industrial, cultural and administrative centers of the region. It is known primarily because of the modernist architecture of the Bauhaus, which was inscribed on the UNESCO list.
The older and larger city of Dessau was founded in medieval times. His neighbor, Roßlau, at the beginning of the 17th century, did not have much of its original architecture due to the destruction of World War II. The Dessau-Wörlitz Gardens located nearby Dessau, covering over 140 km of landscape parks and ponds, are very popular. They include several palaces and decorative buildings, such as the Roman ruin 'Seven Pillars'.
The most important monuments of Dessau-Roßlau are relatively young and come from the first half of the 20th century. They include buildings erected according to the designs of Walter Gropius, including the Bauhaus Building, which now houses the Bauhaus Dessau Museum and the Meisterhäuser complex built for professors of the local university.
A popular attraction of the city is the Dessau Zoo, which mainly lives European animals. There is also the Hugo Junkers Museum of Technology and the Anhaltische Art Gallery.
