Bielefeld is a large cultural, university and industrial center in the Rhineland. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, which is visible, among others, in the old town partially preserved after the war damage. The city is known for interesting museums and the Christmas market taking place in December.
The city was founded in the early 13th century at the intersection of trade routes. Thanks to this, it quickly grew rich and grew. It became an important stop on the routes of merchants traversing Germany and nearby France. The souvenir of this period of the city's development are the Old Market Square, the Town Hall, the Old Town Church of St. Nicholas, the Gothic Church of Mary and tenements with Gothic and Renaissance facades.
The most important monument of Bielefeld is the Sparrenburg Castle erected in the mid-thirteenth century on the slopes of the Teutonic Forest. You can visit its underground corridors and admire the panorama of the city from the 37-meter tower.
The second of the golden periods in the development of Bielefeld began at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Then the city became a thriving industrial center. The company founded at that time, Dr. Oetker is one of the most important German food producers. You can visit the World Dr. museum Oetker showing the history of the plant. The Ravenberger Spinnerei spinning mill surrounded by the park is also a very famous place. In turn, the Wäschefabrik Museum presents the history of the lingerie factory.
Bielefeld offers tourists the opportunity to visit many interesting museums. The most valuable are the Bielefeld Art Gallery, the Ethnographic Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Huelsmann Museum and the German Fan Museum. There are also parks and places for recreation.
