The monument commemorates the leader of the Cheruskis, Arminius, who in 9 AD defeated the Roman legions in the battle in the Teutoburg Forest. The sculpture was unveiled in 1975. Its author is Ernst von Bandel. The monument is located on the top of the hill and measures 53 m in height, of which the statue itself measures 25 m. It is the tallest monument in Germany.
