Detmold is a historic city, which until 1918 was the capital of the Principality of Lippe, and until 1947 the Free State of Lippe. The seat of the former owners of the principality and one of the largest open-air museums in Germany is located here.
Although the first information about Detmold comes from the eighth century, it did not exist as a city until the second half of the thirteenth century. It flourished after the barons of Lippe made it their seat. From 1789, it was the capital of the principality, which after World War I changed its status to a free state.
A remnant of Detmold's former significance is the Renaissance Prince's Castle, which remains privately owned to this day. It is surrounded by a vast landscape park with picturesque walking paths.
In the city center a lot of historic tenement houses and a few churches built mainly in the 17th and 17th century have been preserved. In turn, in the Lippe Regional Museum you can learn about the history and culture of these areas.
To the south of Detmold is the place where in 9 AD the Cherussian leader Arminius Herman defeated the Roman legions under Varus. Here stands the statue of Hermann erected in 1875 with a statue of a victorious leader.
The most important attraction of the city is LWL. The open-air museum belongs to the largest attractions of this type in Germany. Rural building facilities from all over Westphalia were gathered here. There are also two ornithological parks in Detmold, Adlerwarte Berlebeck, which mainly breeds birds of prey and the Bird Park Heiligenkirchen, which is home to birds from around the world, including parrots, pelicans, toucans and ostriches.
