Albstadt is a city in the picturesque region of the Swabian Alb. Active tourism related to mountain hiking is dominant here.
The city was founded in the 20th century as a result of the merger of several surrounding communes. Traces of settlement in this area come from the Iron Age. Objects found in the cemetery from this period can be seen, among others at the British Museum. In the past, Albstadt was an iron smelting center. There were small ironworks here, which, however, due to the poor quality of the raw material, did not survive the industrial revolution.
Today, Albstadt is a modern city with low-rise buildings and mainly focused on small industry and services. Tourism develops mainly in the form of hiking in the surrounding hills. The areas of the Swabian Alb with forested hills and rock outcrops are an attractive hiking area. One of the main excursion destinations is the Zellerhorn viewpoint.
