Albertville is known primarily as the city of the 1992 Winter Olympics. It is an alpine ski and holiday resort with access to many ski stations in the area.
The city was founded in the first half of the 19th century by Charles Albert of Savoy. He incorporated into the new center the town of Conflans, existing since the 14th century, which is now used as the Old Town in Albertville. The oldest part is built on a hill. It is surrounded by city walls with the Gate of Tarine and the Gate of Savoie. Its center is Conflans Square, home to the Albertville History Museum and numerous tenement houses with restaurants and cafes.
The lower part of Albertville was built in the 19th century. It is dominated by modern, though in many places referring to the traditional Alpine architecture. The main attraction of this part of Albertville is the Olympic Museum, which reminds you of the 1992 Winter Games. There is also an Olympic stadium and a still used hall where skating disciplines took place. The surrounding Savoy Alps is a popular skiing area.
