Rudkøbing is the largest city on the island of Langeland. Its center has retained its historic character with half-timbered houses and low tenement houses.
The city has developed since the Middle Ages and was surrounded by solid defensive walls in the past. This was due to the numerous attacks carried out by the Swedes on the island. Several times, the fortifications saved the city from destruction. To this day, you can see many historic houses and a Gothic church in the center.
There are several sandy beaches around Rudkøbing. The most famous of them is Drejet Beach, located near the Spodsbjerg Marina. In summer, several campsites operate in their vicinity, which means that they are often visited by tourists.
The main attraction of Rudkøbing is the Museum of the lagenlands, which introduces you to the reality of life on the island in the past. The Skovsgaard Gods Castle and the historic wooden Skovsgaard Mill, surrounded by a park, are also located near the city.
