The painting collection located in Gavnø Castle is the largest private collection of paintings in Scandinavia. It includes over a thousand works of art, including masterpieces of European painting from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Among them is also the country's largest collection of portraits, the oldest of which date back to 1460.
The collections are divided into several categories. These include foreign art, including copies of works by Peter Paul Rubens and Nicolas Poussin, family portraits, portraits of members of the Danish and Swedish royal families and Danish noble families, and historical painting.
The collection was founded by Count Otto Thott, who bought the castle in 1737. Among the collected portraits, you can also see 4 pictures of the founder.
