Hirtshals is a small town and an important ferry port with connections between Denmark and Iceland and the Faroe Islands. It is not far from here to the place where the Baltic Sea and the North Sea meet, and the surroundings of the city allow for hiking and cycling trips.
The town is located on the island of Vendsyssel-Thy, which is the northern part of Jutland. Its coasts are characterized by sandy beaches, such as Kjul Beach, and good conditions for windsurfing. Strong winds blow here, which cause the formation of dunes and the application of sand. During World War II, these areas were of strategic importance and were fortified by the Germans. In the surrounding area, including Krage Beach and Tornby Beach, you can see the remains of 10 defensive batteries that make up the Hirtshals Bunker Museum.
The biggest attraction of Hirtshals is the North Sea Oceanarium. In addition to fish and crustaceans from the surrounding waters, you can see, among others, seals and porpoises. Hirtshals lighthouse is also very popular among tourists, which is a great viewpoint over the surrounding area. You can also visit the Hirtshals Museum, and in the Hirtshals Harbor area, enjoy one of the many restaurants serving fish and seafood dishes.
