Faxe is a city known primarily for the production of beer and one of the most important Danish breweries. It is also called the Kingdom of Limestone because it is home to the largest opencast mine of this stone in Scandinavia.
The city has existed since the Middle Ages and from its beginnings it was a center of limestone mining. Raw material from Faxe was shipped to construction sites all over Denmark. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Faxe Brewery was established in the city, which is still operating and is one of the leading brands of Danish beer.
The most important attractions of Faxe are related to its natural wealth, which is limestone. There is the Geo Museum here, which in addition to the permanent exhibition also has an educational trail. On the route, you can rent a shovel and look for fossils in the rocks yourself. The Faxe Kalkbrud limestone excavation, the largest in Scandinavia, is equally interesting. Lunar landscapes, numerous lakes with intensely colored water and numerous walking paths attract many tourists to this place.
Some historic buildings have been preserved in the city. The oldest of them is the 13th-century Romanesque church in Faxe. You can also see the historic Blåbæk Windmill and visit the Østsjællands Museum.
Due to Faxe's location by the sea, there are also beaches. Although the town is not a center of leisure tourism, you can meet sun lovers and even sea lovers every summer on Feddet Beach and other beaches.
