Kongens Nytorv
Local name: Kongens Nytorv
It is the largest square in the city. It is covered with paving stones arranged in multi-colored hiking trails. The square is used as an exhibition space, photo exhibitions are often displayed here. In winter, an ice rink is built on it, with a skate rental shop.
In the center of the square, surrounded by a cast-iron fence, there is a horse-drawn statue of King Christian V. It was made in 1688 by the French sculptor Abraham César Lamoureux. It is the oldest equestrian statue in all of Scandinavia. It shows the monarch in the costume of the Roman emperor and with a helmet decorated with laurels. A little further, there are 4 allegorical statues of Athena, Heracles, Artemisia and Alexander the Great.
There are several historic buildings around the square, including the baroque Charlottenborg Palace, Thotts Palace, now a French embassy, and Harsdoffske Palace. Also of note are the Royal Danish Theater and Hvids Vinstue, Copenhagen's oldest wine bar.
