Ærøskøbing is the largest city on the island of Ærø. It has a nice, well-kept Old Town with houses mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries, a marina and a sandy beach that is crowded in summer by crowds of lovers of relaxing by the water.
The city was founded in the 13th century and was from the very beginning the main commercial and port center of the island. In the first half of the 17th century, it was consumed by a fire, followed by reconstruction and further development of trade. It is from these times that the half-timbered houses, low, colorful houses on cobbled streets and the buildings of the market square come from.
The city houses the Ærø Museum, which shows the history of life on the island, and the Ærøskøbing City Museum. Interesting collections of ships in bottles and items related to the sea can be found in the Bottle-Peter Collection.
The life of Ærøskøbing has been associated with the sea for centuries. There is a port and Ærøskøbing marina, which is mainly used for tourist purposes in the summer season. You can spend time on the well-developed Vester Beach, and the picturesque cliffs of Voderup with walking paths rise nearby.
