Obertraun is a small tourist town situated at the foot of the Dachstein Massif on Lake Hallstatt. It is a mecca for freeriders in winter and a good base for hiking and water sports in summer.
The small village occupies a part of the valley surrounded by mountain slopes, on the shores of a lake. In summer, you can go kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding and swimming in its waters. There are also several dozen kilometers of mountain bike routes of varying difficulty along the lake. A big attraction and a popular excursion destination from Obertraun is the Dachstein Plateau, which can be reached by cable car built in 1947. Limestone caves with their magnificent dripstone formations are open to the public.
In winter, on the other hand, the Obertraun area is very popular with freeride skiing enthusiasts. The routes are located on the slopes of the Krippenstein mountain, part of the Dachstein Massif. There are also several downhill runs, including one 11 km long and allowing you to go down directly from the upper station into the valley.
