Nyon is a city on Lake Geneva, a popular base for exploring its shores, and home to several interesting museums. Its surroundings form one of the most famous wine regions of Switzerland.
During the Roman times, there was Colonia Julia Equestris in Nyon. The ruins of the amphitheater and the 10 km long aqueduct remained. Monuments from this period can be seen in the local Roman Museum. The interior of the villas of wealthy inhabitants of the city was reconstructed here. You can also see items from the excavations.
On the shores of Lake Geneva is the Old Town of Nyon with numerous representative houses and a Romanesque-Gothic church. Above it rise the walls of the Nyon Castle, which was built in the 13th century. Its interiors now house the Historical Museum and the Porcelain Museum, presenting the products of the local manufacture.
The big attraction of Nyon is the Museum of Lake Geneva, which presents various aspects of the functioning of the reservoir, from its creation and nature to the history and connections of the cities on the shore with water. There is also an aquarium within the museum.
The Nyon area forms the La Côte wine region. A wine route runs through the vineyards, and the town and surrounding area are also known for their excellent cuisine, including fish dishes.
