Erlenbach im Simmental is an alpine village situated in a beautiful valley, at the foot of the peaks reaching over 3000 m above sea level. It is a center of active tourism, mainly hiking and climbing, and in winter there are cross-country skiing trails.
The town was founded in the 16th century and very quickly became an important cattle trade center located along the route leading through the Alpine passes. Until the 19th century, it was one of the richest in the region and had small-town features. Many impressive wooden houses with decorative balconies and tiled roofs have been preserved here from that period. They were among the richest cattle traders.
Today Erlenbach im Simmental is primarily a holiday destination. The rocky peak of Srtockhorn rises above it, 2,190 m above sea level, which can be accessed by the Stockhorn cable car. The views from the Stockhorn Observation Deck span over 200 Alpine peaks.
The surrounding mountain lakes are also a highlight of Erlenbach im Simmental. One of them is Lake Hinterstocken, to which you can quite a hiking trail.
