Škofja Loka is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Slovenia. You can see large fragments of city fortifications, tenement houses with decorated facades and a market square with a baroque plague column.
The history of the city is about 1000 years old. The settlement here was established by the Bavarian bishops of Freising. In the thirteenth century, it received city rights and, due to its location on the trade route, began to experience intensive development. As a result, i.a. Škofja Loka was surrounded by mighty fortifications, a large part of which has survived to this day. The most important attraction of the city is the Gothic-Renaissance Loka Castle, which is visible from a distance. Currently, it houses the Škofja Loka Museum, considered one of the best in the country.
The old town stretches below the castle. Visiting Škofja Loka leads through narrow streets to the Town Square surrounded by tenement houses. A beautiful corner is also the Capuchin Stone Bridge from the 14th century, one of the best preserved medieval stone bridges in this part of Europe. In the old town, you can also visit the Old Town Hall, the Baroque Capuchin Church and Monastery, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
