Porto Moniz is a holiday and tourist destination in Madeira, known for its natural sea pools, which were created as a result of the lava flowing from the volcano congealing. The surroundings of the town are mountainous, which is conducive to active recreation.
Most of the town's buildings are situated on the slope of the mountains falling to the Atlantic. At their foot, there is only a tourist center with restaurants, cafes and shops. The Porto Moniz Promenade also runs along the seafront, with stunning ocean views.
Porto Moniz's biggest attraction are the natural ocean pools right on the shore. They were created as a result of volcanic eruptions and the formation of solidifying lava by sea waves. There are two complexes of such pools in the village. One is located in front of the small, rocky island of Ilheu Mole. The second one, located more to the west, is better developed, with a small sandy beach and lifeguards' care.
One of the few monuments of Porto Moniz is Fort St. John the Baptist, belonging to the historic fortifications of Madeira. Today, it houses a small but interesting Madeira Aquarium, where you can watch fish and other marine animals living in the surrounding waters.
Due to its location, Porto Moniz is also a good starting point for hiking and hiking tours. The Levada da Ribeira da Janela trail starts here, one of the most beautiful in the northern part of the island and leading through natural laurel forests. There is also the spectacular Miradouro da Santa viewpoint in the area.
