Built at the end of the 15th century, the cathedral is one of the few assets of Madeira from the early colonization of the island. The church was built in the Gothic style of dark stone from local quarries. It is a three-nave building with a square tower and ogival entrance portal. The interior is covered with cedar wood ceilings, and the presbytery has a beautiful, late-Gothic altar and a processional cross donated by King Manuel I.
