Church of Saint John the Evangelist

The most impressive church on Madeira, which is the best example of mannerism and early baroque on the island. It was built as a monastery temple of the Jesuit order and follows the patterns of Jesuit churches known from the continent. Its powerful, tripartite facade is decorated with expressive sculptures of saints from this order. The interior is covered with azulejos tiles. They are also decorated with richly carved main and side altars and Baroque paintings.
