Budva is one of the most important resorts on the Montenegrin coast. It lies near Boka Kotorska, at the foot of the slopes of the mountains falling steeply into the sea. It consists of a small, but extremely charming Old Town surrounded by defensive walls and a leisure area with hotels, enthusiasts and tourist infrastructure.
The city was in the past a small coastal fortress that protected the port. Today, its remains are the high defensive walls that hide a tangle of streets, squares and stone buildings. The Old Town comes alive above all in the evenings, when restaurants, bars and souvenir shops are open late.
Within the Old Town there are former barracks in which the maritime museum now operates. They adjoin the walls, which offer a beautiful view of the countryside. Among the buildings stand out Gothic cathedral of St. John the Baptist with a soaring tower, a small church of Santa Marija in Punta from the ninth century and the nineteenth century church of St. Mikołaj with the interior decorated with polychromes.
Just outside the city walls there is a yacht and tourist harbor, and further along the beach covered with thick, light sand stretches the promenade. There are plenty of stalls, shops, as well as bars and restaurants where you can eat mainly fish and seafood, some caught from the pools in front of customers.
In front of Budva there is a small island of St. Nicholas. It is a popular holiday destination to which boats depart from the port. The island with a small church is also a great vantage point to the Old Town.
