Bar is one of the most important resorts in Montenegro and the country's largest seaport. Situated on a bay and surrounded by hills, the town is relatively new, but in its vicinity is the Stari Bar with a fortress and the ruins of a town dating back to the 6th century.
In ancient times, on the site of today's Bar, there was the settlement of Antibarum. It was destroyed by barbarian tribes, and revived in the 6th century. Since then, the history of today's Old Bar, situated on a hill, approximately 5 km from today's town, dates back to that time.
Stari Bar, which was passed in the following centuries into the hands of Venice, Byzantium and Turkey, was taken by the Montenegrins in 1878. Even then, the port and the surrounding districts developed on the coast, which today are simply called Bar or New Bar. Stari Bar gradually depopulated, and the work of its destruction was completed by the earthquake in 1979. Today, it is a picturesque ruin, surrounded by defensive walls, with numerous churches and stone houses. The ruins of the Old Bar and the local fortress are the main historical attractions of Bar and its surroundings.
The modern city by the sea does not have so many monuments anymore. The oldest buildings, such as King Nicholas' Palace, come from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The modern cathedral of St. Jan Włodzimierz, which fits perfectly into the landscape. While visiting the Bar, you can also see the old olive tree, which is considered to be the oldest olive in the world.
The main attractions of Bar are related to its seaside location. It is a dynamically developing holiday and holiday resort. There are over 20 km of beaches in the vicinity of the city, the most famous of which is the pebble Royal Beach located in the city center. In the vicinity of the city, you can also find sandy beaches, such as Velki and Mali Pijesak or the Red Beach, which can only be accessed from the sea. You can go on a cruise from the modern marina in Bar, where tourist boats, yachts and excursion boats are moored.
