The church and the monastery were built at the end of the 13th century thanks to the efforts of Augustians. Among other Venetian temples, it is also distinguished by the fact that its presbytery stands on a bridge that has been thrown over the canal. The church is one of the most important examples of international Gothic in Venice.
The sacristy contains paintings by Jacop Tintoretto: The Last Supper, Prayer in the Garden of Olives, Christ washing the feet of the Apostles, Resurrection. Its brick facade has high windows decorated with rich terracotta ornaments. However, in the basement there is a carved, late-Gothic portal, whose author is probably Bartolomeo Bona. The impressive interior of the temple is additionally decorated with columns separating the main nave from the side ones. The columns were made alternately of white Greek marble and red Verona marble.
Next to the churches of Santi Giovanni e Paolo and Frari, it is the third monastery church in Venice. The temple is located on Campo Santo Stefano square, which was famous in Venice for its bullfights. The last took place in 1802.
